The journey to Carbon Net Zero can be difficult to start. We have developed a five step approach to measuring and managing carbon.
1. Understand your goals
2. Measure carbon baseline
3. Identify Carbon Impact areas
4. Identify Carbon Reduction initiatives
5. Make the case for change and continuously improve
We briefly discuss each area below;
1. Understand your goals
Your Sustainability Strategy will have laid out your environmental goals. Incoming regulations will make certain reports mandatory in specific trading locations and we can help identify gaps and advice on the most appropriate standards to follow. Our aim is to bring these goals together to provide an easy to understand set of KPI's to communicate within your organisation.
2. Measure your carbon baseline
We build a reporting framework that clearly shows what we are measuring and the boundaries of the carbon measurement exercise. Using your inventory data we start to match emissions values against your inventory calculating both lifecycle and run carbon. We use different carbon databases depending on the function and aim for a like-for-like match. This initial carbon matching exercise identifies data gaps and any assumptions we need to agree with you. We assess Scope, 1, 2 and 3 carbon and use the data for different reporting purposes.
We visualise carbon data using measurable data points to ensure carbon data is clearly understood and actionable. We aim to build a repeatable and transparent process to ensure carbon reporting is consistent, reliable and trusted.
3. Identify your Carbon Impact areas
The Carbon Measurement data will be analysed to assess carbon hotspots and areas where you could have an impact immediately. The Carbon Measurement exercise will generate interest from your internal teams and we often see Carbon Impact recommendations completed whilst we are working with the impacted team.
4. Identify Reduction Initiatives
Reducing carbon can involve changes to the way you buy, operate and dispose of assets. These types of initiatives often involve multiple teams and functions which is why we separate medium to long term initiatives from immediate changes (Carbon Impact).
5. Make the case for Change and Continuously Improve
Regulations are changing annually and your carbon initiatives will need to evolve alongside the regulatory landscape. We provide a solid basis to continually improve and deliver against your net zero targets.
